Check dams plays important role in the Environment by conserving water, reclaiming –restoring small river flows, raising the water level, and ultimately providing water for drinking, irrigation, cultivation, and helping to grow trees.
“The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment is to get everybody involved”-Richard Rogers.
Today the need of the world is to conserve the environment. Earth is being attacked with deforestation, nonconservation of rainwater, pollution, and so on. It’s high time we need to wake up and try our best what we can do as Lions. Rightly international has earmarked Environment as a focus project for years.
Small and humble efforts and dedication by all team members can result in wonderful results. I am very much pleased to share a success story in water conservation. In District 3231A3, under JALSWARDHAN YOJNA 18 check dams constructed with Govt of Maharashtra participation (45% Lions: 55% Govt) during my tenure in 2018-2019 as District Governor, provided a good source of water to almost 50 villages, till April, May. Earlier water was to be supplied by water tankers. Villagers could earn their live hood and stop their migration to work on brick kilns .due to this their children could go to school and complete their education and trees in the surrounding could be irrigated.
These are visible benefits of check dams our District has experienced.
Due to a change of state Government, there was a delay in extending the scheme of Govt participation, and the benefit of GR dated 2/11/2018 was not available in spite of repeated representation. still same is under consideration by Govt of Maharashtra.
We got 50 check dams sites technically approved, surveyed, and ready for construction. the appeal was made to all Districts Governors of District 3231A3 for participation in this noble project.
Checkdams at the sites store 25 crore litres of rain water that would make a huge difference to the rural areas. Lots more to say, would share the progress in the coming weeks.
